My final for ECON 041 involved researching a current event/development in any industry and predicting what it will do to current and future economies. I chose augmented reality as my topic, and I presented this slideshow to my ECON teacher for my final grade in the course (I got 100%! Yay!). My research revealed to me that AR is a slowly growing industry, but that it is likely a victim of the trough of disillusionment. This is a term in economics to describe the initial 'hype' of a product launch that is immediately followed by a rejection for some reason. Whether this reason is price, convenience, necessity, or a combination, most products, especially in technology, follow this pattern. Then, after the initial 'trough,' the product gains significant popularity over time as it is refined, accepted, and made more readily available.

Government was a difficult class. History is easily my worst/least favorite class, but government was a nice twist on a previously dull subject. While it offered its fair share of challenges, I enjoyed how difficult government was for me. It required more studying and reading than any of my other classes, and this provided an incredible satisfaction once I completed the course. One of the assignments was unlike anything I had done all through high school. I was instructed to write a letter to each senator and one house member of my state after researching their recent involvements in their field. I spent time looking up all three of my congressmen, constructed a letter to each of them, and then actually submitted each letter through each congressmens' respective website. I got responses from 2/3 of them, and they were thankful for my interest in their work and the feedback I provided. I learned about what's going on in congress right now and about what it's like to write a semi-professional letter to a real person. The second half of my English for senior year took me through a course titled,"Life is a Stage." This emphasized that we are all actors in something greater, and that we all have a part to play. One assignment in this course instructed me to sit down with a group of people (in my case, my family) and reflect on what we believe to be courageous. We were given 12 different scenarios and had to determine whether or not the act was courageous, and if so, why it was courageous. After that activity, I wrote an essay involving our responses. I revised this essay, discussed it with a teacher's assistant, and presented a modified version of my essay as a speech. This assignment forced me to think deeply about a usually concise topic, and then adapt that in a few different ways. I learned about how to give a speech, the elements of writing extended metaphors, and the critical thinking required to convert my thoughts into writing. The first half of my senior year English class took me through a course titled,"Life is a Journey." This course highlighted various literature and other media to enhance my literary ability, but also to emphasize that we all embark on a unique journey in our day-to-day lives. I wrote a literature based essay as part of this lesson where I reflected on a few writings I read earlier in the course. I was told to compare and contrast their relevance to the course theme and write a 5-7 paragraph essay about it. This greatly increased my understanding of the literature and allowed me to think critically about hidden meanings in the class reading assignments. |
